Our Goal.

The goal of this program project is to establish a center of excellence in which the precise role of cysteine thiol modifications by nitric oxide synthase in respiratory cell biology can be studied and defined. We have investigators with expertise in airway epithelial biology and disease (Gaston, Project 1), S-nitrosothiol signaling as it relates to pulmonary vascular disease and pulmonary arterial hypertension (Palmer, Project 2) and S-nitrosothiol signaling related to ventilatory control and apnea (Lewis, Project 3) (1-9). We will share expertise across a broad range of scientific disciplines and each Project will make extensive use of the Core facilities. The proposed Program takes advantage of a unique opportunity: we have three senior investigators with extensive experience in S-nitrosothiol biology in the respiratory system all now located at the University of Virginia..
